A police van was set on fire by protesters. Angry mobs chanted 'Stop the boats' and kicked out at police vans sent to restore order.

Some threw smoke bombs, with men wearing caps and shorts charging at outnumbered police.

Scores of riot vans and patrol cars raced to the scene as a police helicopter hovered overhead as the violence spread out of control.

Merseyside Police 'sickened' by scenes in Southport tonight

Mersyside Police have condemned the 'sickening' violence which has broken out amid speculation over the identity of the suspect who was arrested in connection with the savage attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

The violence appears to have been fuelled by false claims that the suspect was an asylum seeker who had arrived in the UK by boat which have spread online.

Merseyside Police said: 'We would urge people not to speculate on details of the incident while the investigation is ongoing.'

The force confirmed that a large group of protesters - believed to be supporters of the English Defence League – began to launch items towards a local mosque on St Luke’s Road in Southport at around 7.45pm.

One officer has suffered a suspected broken nose and police vehicles have been damaged and set on fire.

It comes after the three girls stabbed to death were today named by police as six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar.

Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss says: 'There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody, and some individuals are using this to bring violence and disorder to our streets.

'We have already said that the person arrested was born in the UK and speculation helps nobody at this time.

'It is sickening to see this happening within a community that has been devastated by the tragic loss of three young lives.'

Yvette Cooper's statement on Southport stabbing

In a House of Commons statement, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told MPs: 'It's difficult to comprehend or to put into words the horror of what happened. These were young children, dancing to Taylor Swift and celebrating the start of the school holidays.

'What should have been a joyful start to the summer turned into an unspeakable tragedy.

'It is extremely important that people don't spread damaging misinformation. False information has already been extensively shared in the last 24 hours.

'Those who do this for their own purposes risk undermining a crucial criminal investigation, and I ask everyone to show some respect for the community in Southport and for families who are grieving and in trauma.

'In these dark and difficult moments, the police must be able to get on with their work, and communities must be given the time and space to grieve and heal without outside voices seeking to use events to stir up division or advance their own views.

'We do need to recognise there are things that are taking place on social media that go against their terms and conditions and their commitments as well and they need to take some responsibility for that.'

Knife crime charity says yesterday's attacks are a 'stark reminder of the urgent need to address the root causes of violence'

A national knife crime charity has said yesterday's attack serves as a 'stark reminder of the urgent need to address the root causes of violence' and tackle knife crime.

The Ben Kinsells Trust was set up by the family of Ben Kinsella - who was stabbed to death in 2008.

The charity's spokesperson said: 'As an organisation set up by a family who lost a son and brother to knife crime, the Ben Kinsella Trust is acutely aware of the devastating impact that knife crime has on the lives it touches.'

In 2010, the organisation successfully lobbied the government to raise the mandatory life sentence for knife-related murder from 15 to 25 years.

Knife crime in England and Wales increased by 4% in 12 months to March 2024, according to figures by the Office for National Statistics. But overall knife-enabled crime is still 3% lower than March 2020.

Starmer - Knife attack 'touches nerve' but today is not time for politics

Southport stabbings latest updates: Police van is set on fire (24)

The Prime Minister said the attack in Southport 'touches a nerve' with the whole country, but added it was 'not the time for politics'.

He said:

It’s awful to contemplate what happened. To hear for myself the experiences of the first responders, what they had to deal with, it’s really hard to take in for anybody.
It’s not what any of them came to work for but, of course, they’re professionals and they deal with it.

Asked about his “mission” to crack down on knife crime, Sir Keir said:

I am very worried about high levels of knife crime and I’m absolutely determined that my Government will get to grips with it.
But today is not the time for politics. Today is the time to focus entirely on the families who are going through such pain and grief, and on the wider community, and, of course, a time to say thank you to those that responded yesterday, in the most awful of circ*mstances.

Speaking to media during his visit to Southport, Sir Keir Starmer said:

I came here to pay my respects to the victims and families who are going through raw pain and grief that most of us can’t imagine – I can’t imagine, as a dad myself; to get a briefing from the chief constable and the emergency services about the ongoing investigation but, also, importantly, to have the opportunity to say to those that were responding yesterday from emergency services, say a personal thank you to them and to shake their hand, and to say that as Prime Minister on behalf of the country, we are grateful for what they did.
They, of course, say that they will respond, they’re professionals, to anything, but there’s no pretending that what they had to respond to yesterday was ordinary.
It was very, very difficult. They were absolutely professional. And it was important for me to come and say simple words – thank you.

It is sometimes really important in life just to come and say a simple thank you to all of you, so let me do that, on behalf of myself, on behalf of the government, on behalf of the country – thank you.

The Prime Minister's visit comes after Home Secretary Yvette Cooper met police chiefs in the town and laid her own flowers at the police cordon.

Home Secretary - Keir Starmer on 'moral mission' to tackle knife crime

Ms Cooper has said the Prime Minister is on a “moral mission” to address knife crime across the country.

When asked what the Government will do to address knife crime and prevent future attacks, Ms Cooper told reporters in Southport:

Well there will be deep distress right across the country, as well as here in Southport, for this appalling, just truly horrific attack, because it’s beyond every parent’s worst nightmare.
You had what should have been a children’s party, having fun in the beginning of the summer holidays, could then turn into something so devastating.
There’s obviously deep concern about knife attacks across the country and that’s why the Prime Minister has said that that is a moral mission to address this, but I think for today the issue really is about Southport and the issue is about the families who have been affected in this case and all of us praying for the injured children and for the little children who have been lost.

Asked why, the Home Secretary said:

There is a serious criminal investigation underway because this was a horrific attack.
It’s important that police pursue every single avenue and that is what Merseyside police are now doing.
I support Merseyside police in that work, but it’s immensely important that they need to be able to continue that and they will provide updates.
You’ll understand that I’m not going to say anything that would cut across their investigation or prejudice that investigation as I take that investigation immensely seriously into this truly horrific attack.

It is with great sadness that today I am here to advise that two young children have died as a result of injuries sustained in a knife attack this morning.
Nine other children have been injured, and six of them are in a critical condition, all those injured have suffered stab wounds sustained during the attack. Two adults are also in a critical condition after being injured during the incident.
A 17-year-old male from Banks in Lancashire, who was born in Cardiff, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and has been taken to a police station where he will be interviewed by detectives
My officers were called to reports of a stabbing at 11.47am at an address Southport. When they arrived they were shocked to find that multiple people, many of whom were children, had been subjected to a ferocious attack and had suffered serious injuries.
It is understood that the children were attending a Taylor Swift event at a dance school when the offender, who was armed with a knife, walked into the premises and started to attack those inside. We believe that the adults who were injured were trying to protect the children at the time they were attacked.
As a mum of two daughters, and the nanna of a five-year-old granddaughter, I cannot begin to imagine the pain and suffering the families of the victims are currently going through and I want to send them our heartfelt condolences and sympathies.
