The Walt Disney Company unveiled a heartfelt tribute to the iconic Sherman Brothers in a new short film, The Last Verse, which premiered as part of ABC News Studios’ The Untold Story of Mary Poppins: A Special Edition of 20/20. The film features a previously unheard verse of “It’s a Small World”, written by the late Richard M. Sherman before his passing in May 2024.

This moving addition to Disney’s musical legacy comes at a momentous time, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of Mary Poppins (1964), for which the Sherman Brothers won Academy Awards® for Best Original Song (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”) and Best Original Score.
A Final Gift from Richard M. Sherman
In the summer of 2023, Richard M. Sherman shared the new verse with Disney CEO Bob Iger, describing it as his “final gift” to the studio he and his brother cherished throughout their prolific careers. Sherman’s enduring passion for music and storytelling shines through in this new verse, which was recorded shortly before his passing.
Reflecting on that moment, Iger shared, “Hearing Richard Sherman recite the final verse to ‘It’s a Small World’ before he died will be a moment I will carry with me forever. This beautiful short film is our tribute to their immeasurable musical contributions, their memory, and to the countless memories they helped create for generations of people around the world.”
The Last Verse: A Celebration of a Timeless Song
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Henry Alex Rubin (Murderball), The Last Verse takes viewers on a touching journey through the six-decade history of “It’s a Small World”, showcasing its enduring impact on global culture and its profound message of unity. The short reflects on the song’s origin as part of the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair attraction, which Walt Disney personally oversaw to support UNICEF. The attraction’s success led to its inclusion in Disney Parks worldwide, where it continues to inspire millions with its message of togetherness.
Today, “It’s a Small World” and its beloved melody are celebrated at Disneyland Park, Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland, solidifying the Sherman Brothers’ place in Disney history.
Nostalgia and Legacy
Richard Brim, Global Chief Creative Officer of adam&eveDDB, the creative agency behind the short film, remarked, “With this film, we wanted to tap into those feelings of nostalgia that are so often associated with Disney, whilst paying homage to the legends that are the Sherman Brothers.”
This beautifully crafted short invites audiences to reflect on how the Sherman Brothers’ music has woven itself into the fabric of Disney’s storytelling, from Mary Poppins to The Jungle Book (1967) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971).
